Some of these melodies I wrote recently, and some long ago. They are all inspired by direct experiences I’ve had, reflections on those experiences. Musicians Mali Obomsawin (acoustic bass) and Magdalena Abrego (electric guitar) kindly joined me for this collaboration. We recorded live, each of us not more than three feet away from one other, deciding quickly on the parameters of improvisation for each song, and creating musical moments that were instantly one of a kind.

I found this piano on the street about 15 years ago. Interested in its unique sonic personality I replaced only the parts necessary for it to play, not worrying about the finer points. As a result you can hear the mechanics of it, and a lot more of the felt, than other pianos. For some reason when I sit down at this instrument I feel like it is playing me just as much as the reverse.

“Ice Fishing at Night” features poet Jenna Rozelle who offered up this piece after hearing the music. The collection of originals is rounded off with a song I’ve always loved by the great Jimmy Giuffre called “Pheonix.”

Recordings come in many forms. Some, require studio lighting, props and months of fine tuning. Some require portrait lighting, and editing of facial expression. This one however is aimed at capturing moments, in simple natural light.  Snapshots of melodies as they could only exist the very day we recorded them. Thanks for listening.
